Agent claims Manchester City made approach to Guus Hiddink

Guus Hiddink's agent has claimed that Manchester City have made tentative enquiries about the Dutchman, even if he looks likely to remain in his role with the Russian national side.

• Paper Round: Hughes under scrutiny

Despite an extensive financial outlay in the summer, City are currently eighth in the Premier League table following their disappointing 3-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night. City have lost only two games in all competitions this season but an earlier run of seven draws in succession has inhibited their challenge for a Champions League place.

Now it is claimed that Hiddink, who won the FA Cup during a temporary spell at Chelsea last season, has been contacted by City chief executive Garry Cook.

His representative, Cees van Nieuwenhuizen, is adamant that Hiddink will not abandon his role as head coach of Russia though, despite their defeat to Slovenia in the World Cup play-offs.

"Yes, I did [speak to Cook]. But Guus is happy with Russia. Definitely," Van Nieuwenhuizen told the Telegraph. "I had a call because I have been working with Garry for 12 years since we worked together at Nike. But I have received calls from all over the world about Guus. There has also been an approach from Juventus.

"He (Cook) asked me if it would be worthwhile having a meeting to discuss the future and what might happen next summer. But I told him that Guus was contracted to Russia.

"I said I didn't think it was worth having a meeting. Guus is very relaxed. He starts his holiday tomorrow and in January there are elections for a new president for the Russian Federation. He is contracted until next summer but there is an offer for him to stay for two more years, and I think he will definitely stay."

Juventus, meanwhile, have denied reports they have approached Hiddink as a possible replacement for coach Ciro Ferrara.

A statement from Juventus read: ''Juventus denies reports coming from England of a possible interest for Guus Hiddink.

''The club has never considered any other coach because Ciro Ferrara has our full backing and is at the centre of our sporting project.''

The Italian club have been struggling of late, slipping to third place in Serie A and getting knocked out of the Champions League earlier this month after a 4-1 humiliation by Bayern Munich.
