Terry: Chelsea will achieve 90-point target

Skipper John Terry insists no team can match Chelsea in the race to 90 Premier League points despite their recent dip in form and the difficulty with which they overcame bottom-feeders Portsmouth on Wednesday.

The 2-1 triumph, thanks to Frank Lampard's second half penalty winner, was Chelsea's first win in five games in all competitions.

But on a day when Arsenal failed to break a similar 1-1 deadlock to drop two points at Burnley, it was this type of win that perhaps gives Chelsea an edge over their title rivals.

Chelsea's three-point Premier League lead over Manchester United could be even greater had they not lost at Manchester City and then thrown away two points with suicidal set-piece defending in a 3-3 home draw with Everton on Saturday. Terry said his side were still on track to achieve their 90-point goal.

"We should be further ahead at the top of the league and we only have ourselves to blame," Terry said. "I understand everyone feeling frustrated, our defending of set-plays was unacceptable.

"We're still on target for 90 points this season and we are the only club which is. Saturday was the first time we have dropped points at home this term and I want it to be the last.''

Manchester United have achieved the 90-point milestone on three occasions on their way to winning the Premier League title (1993-94, 1999-00 and their most recent triumph in 2008-09), while Chelsea broke through the barrier in both their championship wins this decade (95 points - 2004-05, 91 points - 2005-06) and Arsenal's Invincibles of 2003-04 also clocked up 90 points. No team has failed to win the Premier League after earning 90 or more points.
