Lehmann handed three-match ban after red card

Stuttgart goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has been handed a three-match ban for a foul on Aristide Bance in his side's 1-1 draw with Mainz.

The 40-year-old stamped on Bance's foot seemingly in revenge for an earlier foul, in the process giving away an 86th-minute penalty which Eugen Polanski dispatched to deny Stuttgart their first win in nine Bundesliga games.

Lehmann was shown the red card by referee Wolfgang Stark and fled from the stadium in a rage, confronting one fan outside the ground. Television pictures showed a clearly incensed Lehmann pull the fan's glasses from his face and only give them back after the fan pleaded for their return.

His ban means he will now miss matches against Hoffenheim, Wolfsburg and Bochum, although an MRI scan on Monday revealed he suffered a ligament strain in his left knee during the match anyway. He has 24 hours to lodge an appeal if he so chooses.

After leaving the ground, the former Arsenal and Germany goalkeeper called for a taxi before opting instead to get on the team bus.

He did not remain on the bus for long, however, as he had a change of heart once again and took a taxi to Frankfurt airport, from where he flew back to his family in Munich.

On Monday, the struggling club announced the former Arsenal keeper - who was fined €40,000 last week for criticising his club - had apologised for his dismissal and had held a long discussion with coach Christian Gross.

Sven Ulreich will take Lehmann's place while he is banned, but the veteran is expected to reclaim his place when the suspension is over.
