Backe leaves Notts County

Notts County have confirmed that Hans Backe has quit as manager of the club, just seven weeks after signing a three-year contract at Meadow Lane.

The Swedish coach was brought in as Ian McParland's successor by director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson but has overseen just nine matches in all competitions since his appointment in October.

A statement on the club's official website said: "The club can confirm that first-team manager Hans Backe has resigned his position at the club.

"The club wishes to thank Hans for his service and wishes him all the best in the future. Dave Kevan has been appointed caretaker manager and will take charge of the league visit to Bournemouth next Monday.''

Backe's surprise departure comes after Munto Finance sold the League Two club to executive chairman Peter Trembling for £1, with the buy-out being completed before Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to Accrington Stanley.

It was Trembling's wish for Eriksson and his staff to remain at Meadow Lane but the club now faces the prospect of looking for its third manager of the season, with Backe's departure fuelling speculation that Eriksson too could be on his way out of Meadow Lane.

But Trembling believes the Notts County project is still very much on course.

"Sven and I are working round the clock on that and come the middle of January we could be in an extremely healthy position and not only back on track but maybe further down the line from where we expected to be, so I am disappointed that Hans has not waited around for that to happen,'' Trembling told Sky Sports News.

Asked about Eriksson's position at the club, Trembling added: "Sven is as before. I spoke to Sven before the buy-out last week and he is on board and as keen as ever and I spoke to him again this morning and there is no change from that perspective.

"There are all sorts of rumours going around and all sorts of speculation and of course we want to get the investment in because when we do we can move on with our plans quicker.

"How can I say he's going to be here for the long term? Sven has got ambitions and we have got ambitions and as long as they are aligned then yes, absolutely he will be here.''
