Essien, Muntari and Gyan given fines

The Ghana Football Association has fined Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Asamoah Gyan and told them they must apologise after they failed to attend a friendly match.

Essien, Muntari and Gyan, who play for Chelsea, Inter Milan and Rennes respectively, did not head to Luanda for an international friendly with Angola last month and there had been suggestions there could be severe punishments.

However, as the Ghana FA believes the players have shown that they regret their behaviour, they have been handed a small fine of $5,000 (£3,000) apiece and told to apologise.

A statement on the governing body's website read: "The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that, after giving hearing to Black Stars players Messrs Sulley Muntari, Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan, it became evident that the players have shown remorse for their actions.

"Therefore, after considering their interest as professional footballers and that of Ghana football, the following decisions have been taken which have to be complied with within seven days, effective December 9, 2009: the players are to apologise to the technical team and players of the Black Stars and each person is to pay a fine of $5,000 each."
