Sir Alex plays down link to Dzeko

Sir Alex Ferguson has distanced himself from speculation linking Erin Dzeko with a big-money move to Manchester United.

The 23-year-old Bosnian is one of the most highly-rated young strikers in Europe, having scored 40 times in 75 Bundesliga appearances.

With Wolfsburg apparently unlikely to repeat their surprise title triumph of last season this term, Dzeko seems certain to leave the Volkswagen Arena next summer.

Indeed, if the price is right, Wolfsburg might even be persuaded to do a deal during the January transfer window, although such a move would be resisted if they reached the Champions League knock-out phase.

A host of top continental clubs are said to be interested in Dzeko, with United reportedly among them after he scored Wolfsburg's goal in the German side's 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford in September.

However, even though at the weekend his assistant Mike Phelan admitted there could be interest in the player by the Red Devils, Ferguson is not adding any fuel to the flames.

"It is an age-old story,'' he said. "Every time someone does well against Manchester United we are going to buy him the next day. There is nothing from Manchester United at this moment concerning Erin Dzeko.''
