Charlie Miller quits Roar

Scottish midfielder Charlie Miller has walked out on the Brisbane Roar after being told he would not be retained after a turbulent second A-League season.

The Roar terminated Miller's contract on Friday because he was keen to move on immediately after being told he wasn't guaranteed a new deal.

The former Rangers player and Scottish international was last season's A-League foreign player of the year but has endured an erratic second year in the league.

The creative midfielder has continued to show his immense skill but has again struggled for fitness and lowered his colours when suspended for a cheap shot on former teammate Robbie Kruse against Melbourne in October.

Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou, who wanted to keep him until January, met with Miller to discuss his future this week.

Postecoglou said they both agreed a contract termination would allow the 33-year-old playmaker to seek further employment for next season.

"We're currently in the process of evaluating our squad for next season and at this point Charlie wasn't guaranteed a place in the squad," he said.

"Charlie and I discussed the matter and, while we'd hoped he would stay until January, he made it clear it was time he moved on to pursue other opportunities.

"We certainly don't want to stand in the way of a professional footballer earning a living and we agreed to his request.

"Charlie's impact on this club, particularly last season, cannot be underestimated. He has been a fantastic player and we wish him all the very best for the future.

"However, it is now time for us to focus on the long-term future of the club and we will be doing that over the coming months."

The Roar are also looking to release back-up goalkeeper Liam Reddy who has lost his starting place to Griffin McMaster.

Reddy wants to take up a contract with Sydney FC but has demanded to be paid out to March by the Roar.
