Atletico say Chelsea readying £100m for Aguero

Atletico Madrid have revealed that Chelsea are prepared to offer £53 million for striker Sergio Aguero.

• Aguero open to summer move
• Harris: Chelsea close on Aguero

Atletico have leaked details of Chelsea's interest to Spanish publication AS, suggesting that Chelsea are willing to put down a £44 million bid for the Argentinean 21-year-old. With add-ons, the total figure would amount to £53 million.

It was revealed last week that Chelsea would top up a £40 million-plus offer with add-ons to take the fee to over £50 million. In addition, Chelsea indicated to the player's agent through third-parties that they would hand the youngster a contract that would see him earn £250,000-a-week, with a starting wage of £6 million a year.

The overall salary package, including lucrative success-related bonuses, would be worth £50 million to the player. That means the entire package is worth around £100 million.

Aguero, though, has indicated that he would prefer to see out this season and move in the summer. However, with FIFA having suspended the transfer ban pending an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), Chelsea urgently need to conclude a deal in the January window while the ban is lifted.

It may be that a readjustment of the figures will tempt club and player to rethink a move in January, although the total package remains worth £100 million.

Manchester City have also made enquiries over the last few days, according to AS, after Aguero suggested his long-term future was away from the Vicente Calderon Stadium. Jose Mourinho has shown an interest in taking the player to Inter Milan, too.

While Inter cannot compete financially, City are prepared to outbid Chelsea, but the player prefers the move to Stamford Bridge as he believes that would be the best place to chase silverware immediately.

The young player feels such a debt to the club he joined as a 17-year-old that he is reluctant to leave Atletico in their current state: fourth from bottom in La Liga with just two wins from 12 games and out of the Champions League. However, he is being advised to move to Chelsea if the two clubs can finalise the transfer deal complexities.

Atletico's financial problems mean they will eventually have to cash in on a player who has a buy-out clause of £60 million. Chelsea are currently refusing to meet that price, although City would come closer.
