Chile's Rangers relegated for disobeying 6+5

Chilean club Rangers have been relegated after being docked three points for fielding one foreign player too many in a match last weekend.

A Chilean Football Association (ANFP) disciplinary tribunal that handed down the sanction also fined Rangers $4,000.

Rangers coach Oscar del Solar fielded six foreign players in the second half of their 1-0 defeat at Cobreloa last weekend when ANFP rules permit a maximum of five at any one time.

The team finished second-bottom of the standings at the end of the qualifying stage of the Clausura championship. The top eight reached the knockout phase.

Del Solar has been quoted by local media saying: "I know they (fans) want to lynch me and I've heard death threats but I'm not hiding and I'm still in (Rangers' home town of) Talca."

Rangers fans marched to the club's headquarters where they daubed the walls with insults and threats against the board and the coach.

The bottom two teams are relegated automatically, the two teams above them go into the promotion playoffs with two second division teams.

Rangers' sanction has benefitted Curico Unido who have moved up from a direct relegation berth into the playoffs.
