Cristiano Ronaldo realistic about Portugal's chances
Cristiano Ronaldo says it is his dream to win the World Cup with Portugal, but admits his team may find it difficult to compete with the very best if they reach South Africa.
Portugal have impressed in recent years, reaching the final of Euro 2004, the semi-finals at the 2006 World Cup and the quarter-finals at Euro 2008, but they have struggled in qualification for next year's World Cup and face a play-off against Bosnia and Herzegovina in November to secure their place.
And, while Ronaldo feels lifting the trophy next summer would outstrip any of his previous achievements, the Real Madrid star knows Portugal will have to improve substantially if they are to succeed.
"It is a dream," he told Bild. "The greatest feeling is for a player to be world champion. Portugal has a good team, but not fantastic. Only with a fantastic performance can you win this title."
Asked how he rated Germany's chances, he said: "It is always hard to play against German teams. In the 2006 World Cup and at Euro 2008, we lost against [Germany]. German defences are always very strong."
