Fit-again Alex keen to make Chelsea impact

As he prepares to make his first appearance of the season on Wednesday night, Alex hopes that an impressive performance in the Carling Cup can catapult him back into the Chelsea first team.

Alex has not played a game for Chelsea since the FA Cup final victory over Everton on May 30 but has finally shaken off the after-effects of groin surgery and will feature in Wednesday's Carling Cup meeting with Bolton Wanderers.

In his absence, Chelsea have enjoyed a promising start to the new season and currently sit top of the Premier League. But Ricardo Carvalho has been unconvincing in recent games and Chelsea have looked vulnerable at set pieces.

Wednesday's return comes at an ideal time for Alex, who is aiming to win a regular place in a Chelsea side that he feels is destined to win silverware this season.

"I am excited to play again, the team has played well in my absence," Alex told the club's official website. "I saw the last game against Blackburn and the team played very well, and had the chance to score even more goals than five. This season we have the qualities to win the Premier League and maybe one of the other competitions.

"I know I will need to do well, I have had almost three months out [following surgery]. Maybe on Wednesday I can play and I will do my best to stay in the team for the rest of the season. I played last week for the reserve team against West Ham and it is very difficult to play that first one, so I hope I can start strongly against Bolton.

"They have often played the long ball which will make it difficult for us. It will be a physical game, they have strong strikers who jump very well, so we will have to be very good to defend against this."
