Doyle: My honesty cost me a penalty

Wolverhampton striker Kevin Doyle says he will not resort to diving despite his honesty working against him as he attempted to stay on his feet under illegal pressure from Richard Dunne in his side's 1-1 draw with Aston Villa.

Referee Peter Walton decided not to award a penalty, but replays showed Villa defender Dunne tugging back on Doyle's arm as the striker struggled to get to the ball near the six-yard box early in the match.

But Doyle said his honest policy won't change. He told the Birmingham Mail: "They say try and stay on your feet and if you are fouled, you are fouled. Just trying to stay on your feet shouldn't alter that. If you go down too easily, you get criticised for that so I tried to stay up and he stopped me from scoring, but the ref was having none of it."

Wolves were given a spot-kick in the second half for a clear-cut foul by Steve Sidwell on Michael Kightly, a decision Doyle felt was overdue based on previous calls and perhaps made easier by the non-award on his tussle with Dunne.

"The one we got in the second half had been a long time coming because in nearly every game we've had a blatant penalty. Probably the ref went in at half-time and found he should have given one to me at the start so when we looked like we should have got one in the second half, he gave it straight away."

Doyle also claimed that smaller, newly-promoted clubs were less likely to be awarded penalties. "Is it harder for teams who are promoted to get penalties? I think so," he said.
