Mandaric confirms Edgar Davids talks

Championship outfit Leicester City are seeking to bolster their promotion hopes with the shock signing of Edgar Davids, who last played at the end of the 2007-8 season.

Foxes owner Milan Mandaric admitted he is in talks to sign the 36-year-old, with the club seeking a coup signing to help their bid for promotion to the Premier League.

Davids has never cost a penny in transfer fees after always seeing out his contracts at previous clubs but his wage demands would likely be well in excess of the club's average.

However, Mandaric insisted wages would not be a stumbling block in the sensational swoop for the former Holland international.

"If we couldn't afford him we wouldn't be talking to him,'' Mandaric told Sky Sports News. "We are a very ambitious club but there is always room for improvement and our goal is to really give it a go and try to get up this year and players of that kind of profile will help us.

"We are in conversation with Edgar and his agent, and at this point that's all I can say. We are progressing and it is potentially exciting, of course, but we are not there yet. I think things will be taking place very shortly and not more than a couple of days.''

Mandaric, who is hoping Leicester boss Nigel Pearson can mastermind a return to the Premier League for the first time since 2004, admitted he expects competition for Davids' signature, with Portsmouth also linked with the dreadlocked midfielder.

But he is adamant the player's age or fitness would not be a problem, despite the Dutchman not having played competitively for almost 18 months.

"I don't know (if other teams are interested) to be honest, but if they are then I wouldn't be surprised,'' Mandaric said. "As long as he's fit, and my manager gives me a green light on that, and he's ready to go and he has the desire to come back to England, age is relative as long as the player is fit and can last a full game. I don't see any problems with that though.''

Davids is a graduate of Ajax's youth academy and was a Champions League winner in 1995 with the club he later re-joined in 2007 after a nomadic career at elite clubs like AC Milan, Juventus, Inter and that loan spell at Barcelona. He also spent time at Spurs from 2005 to 2007 and won 74 caps for his country, captaining the national side on several occasions.
