Mariner resigns from Revs to join Plymouth

New England Revolution assistant coach Paul Mariner has ended his six-year stint with the Revs after accepting an offer to join English Championship side Plymouth Argyle as head coach.

Mariner resigned from the Revolution, effective after Saturday night's 0-0 draw with Chicago.

The former England international striker, 56, started his playing career with the Pilgrims in 1973 and said that it was difficult for him to turn down an offer from the club where he first broke into the professional ranks.

"Plymouth Argyle is in my blood," Mariner said. "The teams you're associated with are the teams you look for every week. When they came knocking on the door asking me to be employed there, I was delighted because I have a lot of old friends there and a lot of old players still down there. When I went back there the last time, it was fantastic. Hopefully, we can do a decent job for all of the supporters and the board."

Mariner is expected to operate in a substantial day-to-day coaching role under current Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock. He praised the Revolution for paving the way for his move.

"They're business people and they're football people," Mariner said. "[The Revs] knew it was an opportunity for me and they didn't want to stand in my way because of all of the different reasons -- financial reasons, career reasons and so forth."

Revolution head coach Steve Nicol expressed his appreciation for Mariner's tenure as an assistant coach.

"He's been a fantastic servant to the club," said Nicol. "I can't tell you how much he's helped me. We'll certainly miss him."
