No North Korea offer for Eriksson

Notts County have denied that former England and Mexico manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has received an offer to coach North Korea at the 2010 World Cup finals.

Newspaper reports had suggested the Notts County director of football was due to fly to Asia, along with chief executive Peter Trembling, to negotiate a potential loan deal to guide North Korea through their first finals since 1966.

But Magpies chief Trembling has denied the rumours and insists Eriksson is fully focused on his role with the English League Two club.

Trembling said: "We wish to make it clear that Notts County have not received any approach nor had any discussions whatsoever with the North Korean FA in relation to Sven-Goran Eriksson becoming an interim manager of their national team.

"Sven is concentrating all his efforts and is totally focussed on the appointment of our new manager in succession to Ian McParland.

"It is correct that I am making a business trip to Asia but this is solely and exclusively on official Notts County business. I will be visiting Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Thailand to discuss a range of Notts County initiatives linked to our 150th anniversary.''

North Korea coach Kim Jong-hun is under fire over concerns his team's playing style isn't good enough to challenge in South Africa next June, despite navigating his side through the tougher of two Asian zone qualifying groups. The nation qualified behind rivals South Korea after conceding just five goals in eight games, but scoring just seven times in the process.

Eriksson has been to the last two World Cups with England, guiding his team to the quarter final stage in 2002 and 2006 and has been in the headlines since joining the ambitious Magpies as part of the club's wealthy, secretive new owners' proposed revolution.

Eriksson told Sky Sports News: "I don't have any offer and I have no plans to be manager, or whatever it is, for North Korea, absolutely not.''

When asked whether he could assure people he would be staying at Meadow Lane, the 61-year-old added: "Of course I can, absolutely.''
