New blow as James Vaughan undergoes surgery

Everton striker James Vaughan has seen his injury curse continue following the news that he has been forced to undergo knee surgery.

Vaughan, who has suffered extensively from fitness problems since becoming the youngest ever goalscorer in Premier League history in 2005, is currently on loan with Championship club Derby County.

However, he played just two games for the Rams before being sent back to Everton for treatment and head physio Mick Rathbone has confirmed that Vaughan required surgery to repair a cartilage tear. Vaughan's loan is due to end in mid-December.

"James suffered a slight tear in his cartilage whilst playing for Derby a couple of weeks ago," Rathbone told the club's official website. "If there is anything positive at all about it, it's that this is a brand new injury - it's not a recurrence of anything he's had before.

"It's a very minor tear and James has been to London this week to have the cartilage trimmed. We hope that he won't be out of action for too long."

Rathbone has also revealed the full severity of an injury suffered by young defender Seamus Coleman over the summer. An infection to a nasty foot blister meant he spent a large portion of the pre-season tour to America in hospital and his very future in the game was under threat.

"When we got off the plane in Seattle the doctor gave Seamus some strong antibiotics because the foot was sore but the infection started eating away quickly," Rathbone said. "When the blister was operated on the surgeon explained Doctor Irving had probably saved the lad's career by acting so quickly."

Meanwhile, both Joseph Yobo and Steven Pienaar are expected to return in time to face Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 17 having reacted well to treatment on thigh and knee injuries respectively.

Captain Phil Neville is also sidelined due to a knee problem but he will avoid surgery and could return to action against former employers Manchester United on November 21.
