Coyle set for reserves run-out

Owen Coyle will swap the touchline for the front line tonight as he takes a break from the Clarets' excellent start to the season to play for the club's reserves at Liverpool.

• Jolly: Clarets crowd helps team draw strength

The 43-year-old was still registered as a player as recently as November 2007 when he was in charge of Scottish First Division side St Johnstone and scored more than 200 goals as a prolific centre forward over his 22 year playing career.

He confirmed his retirement after agreeing to become Clarets boss, although he made a handful of appearances for the reserves last season, scoring a memorable goal against Accrington in April.

The international break means Burnley have a number of players away and so Coyle has taken the opportunity to lead the line and pass on valuable real-time experience to 19-year-old fellow striker Wes Fletcher.

First-team fringe players Christian Kalvenes, David Edgar and Richard Eckersley are also included for the clash at Prenton Park.

Former Leeds and Grimsby goalkeeper Jonathan Lund today signed a one-year contract with Burnley and the 20-year-old will make his debut tonight.
