Spurs' Redknapp hits out over tax investigation

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has hit out over reports he will be quizzed over unpaid taxes, claiming that he is the victim of a witch-hunt by the Inland Revenue.

Redknapp won compensation from police after a raid on his home in November 2007 was declared to be 'unlawful,' but fresh investigations into his financial affairs have caused the Spurs' manager to speak out.

"They won't let it go even though I've got nothing to hide,'' he told the Sun. ''And you know why? Because it's me. This is about a discrepancy of around £10,000 in income tax. I've paid £10 million in income tax over the past 10 years and this is what it's come down to.

"If it had been anyone else, a normal member of the public, they would have dropped it, or told them to pay up with a bit of interest and that would have been the end of the matter.

''But not with me and I'm getting sick of it. It's been two years and this is what it has come down to. They have wasted however many millions of pounds of taxpayers' money and this is all they have to show for it."

Redknapp claims former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric made an investment on his behalf in the wake of striker Peter Crouch's £5 million sale to Aston Villa in 2002 and, as he was director of football at Fratton Park at the time, says he was contractually entitled to a payment.

"I was unhappy about my bonus over the sale and Milan made this investment on my behalf,'' he added. ''I thought the whole thing had been sorted out. Milan doesn't think any tax is due on it anyway. They raided my house at the crack of dawn but have come up with nothing."
