Portsmouth finally get a win

The demands of television and the Europa League meant that there were only four Premier League games on Saturday afternoon, no amount of hyperbole could make it seem vastly interesting, but here's a round-up nonetheless.

The biggest story was at Molineux, where after seven straight defeats, Portsmouth finally managed to get some points, winning 1-0 at Wolves. Summer signing Hassan Yebda got the goal, rising to head powerfully into the corner to convert Kevin Prince Boateng's right-wing cross.

At Old Trafford, Manchester United scored yet another late goal to deprive Sunderland of victory, Anton Ferdinand deflecting in Patrice Evra's shot for a 2-2 draw. Darren Bent had opened the scoring for the away side and although Dimitar Berbatov equalised, Sunderland were soon ahead again through Kenwyne Jones. But they couldn't quite hang on, despite shutting United down for large parts of the game.

Bolton started well at home to Tottenham, taking the lead inside three minutes when Carlo Cudicini could only parry Lee's shot to Ricardo Gardner. They went on to dominate the half, but were pegged back on 34, Niko Krancjar running onto Peter Crouch's knockdown to drive the ball low past Jussi Jaskelaainen.

Bolton retook the lead halfway after 69 minutes, Lee and Tamir Cohen dissecting the Spurs defence for Kevin Davies to head in the latter's cross at the far post. But they couldn't hold it, Vedran Corluka heading in Lennon's corner to earn Spurs a point in a 2-2 draw. All of Tottenham's outfield players have now scored this season.

Phil Brown will be a happier man this evening, after Hull's 2-1 home victory over Wigan. New signing Jan Venegoor of Hesselink got the opener on the hour, Geovanni taking advantage of an error by Titus Bramble to score what proved to be the winning goal eight minutes later. Wigan pulled one back through Scott Sinclair, but Hull hung on.

Like Stoke last season, it's beginning to look as though Burnley will stay up thanks to their excellent home form. After an even first half, they took the lead against Birmingham early in the second after Joe Hart helpfully dived out of the way of Steven Fletcher's mis-hit shot. Andre Bikey got number two, after a battling run and slick one-two, meaning that Sebastian Larsson's late free kick was only a consolation as the Clarets won 2-1.
