Martinez has no sympathy for Hull plight

Wigan manager Roberto Martinez admits he cannot have any sympathy for Hull counterpart Phil Brown ahead of tomorrow's clash at the KC Stadium.

Hull are currently on a four-match losing streak - three of which have come in the Barclays Premier League - and slipped to next-bottom of the table after last weekend's 6-1 hammering at Liverpool.

But Martinez, whose side won one in six prior to the surprise victory over Chelsea, does not feel sorry for Brown as he is wary of being turned over by the wounded Tigers.

"There is no sympathy in that respect. I think this is the worst time to play them,'' the Wigan boss said. "Losing against Liverpool the way they did urges you to produce a reaction and that is the dangerous state Hull are in and we need to be aware of that.

"They will look to bounce back in front of their fans. They had a big disappointment but I am sure everyone at Hull is hoping the team is going to click.

"We all hope they are not going to click at the weekend but we need to be prepared and ready and expect a completely different game to the one we had against Chelsea.''

Martinez knows exactly what Brown and his players will have gone through after the Liverpool defeat as he and his squad experienced the same after a disappointing 4-0 loss at Arsenal almost a fortnight ago.

He hopes they can use that experience to prepare for tomorrow.

"It is going to help us, knowing how we felt after the Arsenal result, to understand how Hull are going to feel,'' Martinez added. "The way you feel is that you are going to give everything you can to get a result on the home fixture.

"We have an insight into what to expect and we have to make sure we don't lose our focus or we are going to get punished.''

The Latics were as good against Chelsea as they were poor against Arsenal at the Emirates and Martinez, who since his arrival in the summer has insisted he is interested in the performances which get results and not the results themselves, noticed a change in attitude against Carlo Ancelotti's side.

"I saw the belief during the Chelsea game. I call it football arrogance and we had that,'' said the 35-year-old. "When you show that it carries on but you can only be arrogant on the pitch if you continue to work as hard as you can.

"That is something we will have to do really well against Hull. It is important we are level-headed but, on the other hand, we have to push ourselves to the maximum because we need to carry on with the level of performance we showed on Saturday.''

Martinez believes matches against the likes of Hull carry more significance than those against the big four of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal.

"Any point is an important one in the Premier League but when you get it against one of the teams that are fighting for the same aim you are they are more important,'' he added. "I know how much it means for both teams to get a result on Saturday. It will affect the performance and we have to be ready for that.''
