Rafa: "Everything" went wrong in horror first half

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez says "everything" went wrong in the Reds horror-show first half against Fiorentina.

•  Fiorentina 2-0 Liverpool

La Viola raced into a two-goal lead thanks to a brace from Stevan Jovetic. When asked what went wrong, the Spaniard said: "In the first half, everything.

"We were watching the game. When we were attacking we were giving the ball away, then we were regaining and playing counter-attack, so we were not winning any second balls, any challenges.

"In the second half you could see we had chances in the first minute. The difference in football is if you take your chances, like they did in the first half, you are winning and it is more difficult for the other team. We were disappointed, everyone was disappointed, but at this level every team is a good team.

"It was not just one player, we were not the best in any part of the pitch. We knew that they were a good team, very organised, good on the counter-attack - and we were giving the ball away all the time and giving them chances.''

Jamie Carragher admitted his side were well beaten by Fiorentina but he is confident the Reds can bounce back. Carragher said: "We didn't perform well enough, we know that. We were slightly better second half, but still not good enough.''

Liverpool produced a more spirited showing in the second period but could not force a way back into the game. Carragher added: "Nothing went to plan. It was a massive game for them, and a massive game for us, but they seemed to be more ready for it from the start, for whatever reason. It is something we have got to sort out but fortunately in the Champions League we have still got four games to put that right.''
