McAllister set to be confirmed in Portsmouth role

Gary McAllister is Portsmouth's new assistant manager and his appointment will be ratified on Tuesday.

Ray Stubbs announced the news at the end of ESPN's live match coverage of the Manchester City v West Ham game and the former Scotland international is expected to be confirmed in his role at Fratton Park within 24 hours.

Last week ESPN Soccernet broke the story that Paul Hart had two games to save his job, and the performance of his team against Everton, despite a seventh defeat at the start of the Premier League season, persuaded the club not to axe him.

However, it is clear that chief executive Peter Storrie needed to bring in a big-name coach, and the suspicion will linger that Hart will eventually be moved upstairs.

McAllister might then take over, or the club may appoint one of the names that has been floating around the South Coast club for over a week now. The names in the frame have been David O'Leary, Glenn Hoddle, Alan Curbishley and Gordon Strachan.

But Pompey have turned to McAllister instead as an interim solution to their current crisis at the foot of the table.

McAllister has been out of a job since December 2008 and the former Leeds boss, whose playing days at Elland Road coincided with Hart's reign with the youth side, recently rejected the chance to join George Burley's backroom staff with Scotland.

Brian Kidd left the role of Portsmouth assistant manger in August, and the team is presently in urgent need of a morale-boosting point, if not a win. McAllister fills the vacancy left by Kidd's rejection of a new contract at Fratton Park in August.
