Chelsea star Cech still 'surprised' by Wigan red

Petr Cech remains adamant that he did not deserve a red card during Chelsea's shock Premier League defeat to Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Cech was dismissed by referee Phil Dowd when his outstretched leg brought down Hugo Rodallega at the DW Stadium, with the Wigan striker then beating substitute 'keeper Henrique Hilario from 12 yards after Cech had argued against the decision.

Chelsea went on to lose the game 3-1, surrendering their 100% league record in the process, and senior figures John Terry and Didier Drogba have both described the club's disappointing performance as unacceptable.

But Cech is still convinced he should not have been ordered from the pitch, especially in light of clarification that he claims referees gave to Premier League players over the summer.

"The complaint was not about the penalty, because you can see why it is given," Cech told the club's official website. "The player clipped my leg and fell down, which you see given many times.

"The surprise was the red card because before the season started referees came to the training grounds to say which cases will be red or yellow cards. We had a good chat with them and one of the points was that if the player gets past the goalkeeper and the ball goes away from the goal, and there is a defender coming behind, it would be a yellow.

"So when the ref whistled I thought it would be a penalty and a yellow card, because Ashley Cole was running behind me. If Rodallega had have shot he would have been there, so that is the surprise.

"You can see some given as red cards as some as yellows. On the same day there was a penalty for Cardiff in the Championship, the goalkeeper made the same contact and got away. But no complaints, he decided to do that. I have a match off and unfortunately have to watch from the stands, that's the way it is."
