Hegarty hopeful of Scotland role

Former Livingston boss Paul Hegarty is awaiting confirmation over his expected appointment as a member of Scotland manager George Burley's coaching team.

Hegarty, 55, made eight appearances for the national side from 1979-1983 and has agreed to join the set-up after being approached by Burley, who was turned down by Gary McAllister last week as the former Leeds boss seeks a return to full-time management.

The Scottish Football Association will officially announce the appointment on Thursday, with former Aberdeen and Dundee United boss Hegarty hoping to be confirmed.

"I did speak to George last week and I am just waiting for the confirmation. When he phoned me about the position I said 'yes, of course I would love to help you'.

"I'd be delighted to be part of the Scotland set-up. If it does materialise I would be delighted to go along with whatever he wants me to do.''

The Scotland boss has been searching for a replacement for Steven Pressley, who quit his coaching role after claiming he was frustrated at the lack of opportunities to coach and have a tactical input. Hegarty appears to fit the bill for Burley and is free to take up the position immediately as he has been out of work since being sacked as Livingston manager at the end of last season.

Burley is eager to appoint someone in time for the friendly in Japan on October 10 as assistant Terry Butcher cannot make the trip because of his Inverness commitments.
