Villarreal are still searching for their first La Liga victory this season after Juca's superb free kick earned Deportivo Coruna a 1-0 win at the Riazor on Sunday.
The Brazilian's curling effort went in off the post after only eight minutes and although Villarreal rallied after the break they could not find a way past keeper Daniel Aranzubia.
New Villarreal coach Ernesto Valverde watched his side slump to their third consecutive defeat and they lie second-bottom in the standings with two points from a possible 15. Valverde joins Valencia's Unai Emery and Atletico Madrid's Abel Resino in the spotlight with the three sides, all considered top-four candidates, struggling to live up to expectations.
Real Mallorca climbed to fourth in La Liga with a 3-0 victory over Real Valladolid. Mallorca made it three wins from three at the Ono Estadi with goals from Nunes, Aritz Aduriz and Borja Valero to continue their impressive start to the campaign. They have 10 points from five games, two behind third-placed Sevilla.
Osasuna continue to recover from a poor start to the season after seeing off Sporting Gijon 1-0 at the Estadio Reyno de Navarra. Javad Nekounam struck the only goal of the game with a second-half penalty as Osasuna made it two wins from two, having previously taken only one point from their opening three games.
Almeria experienced a case of deja vu as Kalu Uche struck a last-gasp equaliser to help his side salvage a 2-2 draw from their home match with Racing Santander. In almost identical circumstances to Wednesday's clash at Atletico Madrid, Almeria took the lead, then conceded two goals to fall 2-1 behind before netting a late equaliser to claim a draw.
La Liga newcomers Xerez earned their first top-flight point but have still to score their first goal after drawing 0-0 at Espanyol.
"It's not much, but the point will be a boost for morale," Xerez coach Jose Angel Ziganda told a news conference. "The players gave their all and it could be a turning point for us. Next Sunday we'll play with more confidence."
Another promoted side, Real Zaragoza, were comfortable 3-0 winners over visiting Getafe with Colombia midfielder Abel Aguilar scoring twice. Zaragoza climbed to seventh on seven points, behind Valencia with eight and Bilbao with nine.
Real Madrid and Barcelona top the standings with 100% records after five matches. Real beat promoted Tenerife 3-0 at the Bernabeu on Saturday and the champions were 2-0 winners in Malaga.
