Ligue 1: Late Gomis goal sends Lyon top

A late Bafetimbi Gomis goal gave Olympique Lyon a 2-1 home win over Toulouse to send the seven-times champions to the top of Ligue 1 on Saturday.

France forward Gomis struck from close range on 72 minutes to give Lyon 17 points from seven games, one point ahead of champions Girondins Bordeaux who host Stade Rennes on Sunday.

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko exploited a blunder by the defence to put Toulouse in front after eight minutes but Lyon levelled through teenage striker Yannis Tafer seven minutes into the second half.

"I want to congratulate the players for the spirit they showed," said Lyon coach Claude Puel, who was without Argentina striker Lisandro Lopez and France defender Jean-Alain Boumsong through injury. "We had quite a few problems but despite that we managed to fight back to earn a deserved win," Puel told Canal Plus.

Olympique Marseille blew their chance to go top, suffering their first Ligue 1 defeat this season after Rafael scored a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory for Valenciennes.

Brazilian defender Rafael headed the winner for Valenciennes six minutes from time to leave Marseille in third place, two points behind leaders Bordeaux who host Rennes on Sunday.

Former Spain striker Fernando Morientes struck from close range on 13 minutes to put the visitors ahead but Serbia defender Milan Bisevac levelled for Valenciennes. Seconds after the equaliser, Senegal striker Mamadou Niang was on target for Marseille before defender David Ducourtioux equalised with a diving header on the half-hour. But in the 84th minute, Rafael was on hand to net the winner for Les Athéniens.

Gonzalo Ruben Bergessio scored a last-minute winner to give Ligue 1 strugglers St Etienne a surprise 2-1 victory in Monaco.

The visitors went into the match third from bottom in the table and eight points below their opponents but took the lead in only the third minute through Boubacar Sanogo. Sebastien Puygrenier equalised for Monaco ten minutes after the break but instead of building on the goal the hosts ended the match with nothing after Bergessio's late intervention.

Goals from Benoit Pedretti and Cedric Hengbart helped Auxerre to a 2-0 victory at the Stade de l'Abbe Deschamps and left Grenoble rooted to the bottom of Ligue 1, still without a point after seven games. The victory was only Auxerre's second in the league this season to move them up to 13th.

The game was soured by an ugly incident in the 20th minute as Grenoble's David Jemmali hacked Auxerre forward Ireneusz Jelen to the floor. The Pole retaliating by hitting out at the Tunisian defender and the referee was left with little option but to send off both players.

Youssouf Hadji's first-half double gave Nancy their first win in four Ligue 1 matches at the expense of Sochaux. The Moroccan scored an early penalty and doubled the advantage before half-time to put the hosts on course for a 2-1 victory. Although Marvin Martin pulled a goal back for Sochaux, it was not enough to stave off a third successive league defeat for Les Lionceaux.

Paris St Germain had to settle for a point against in-form Lorient afterGuilaume Hoarau cancelled out Arnold Mvuemba's effort on the stroke of half-time.

Christian Gourcuff's players had won three of their previous four games to move into the top half of the table - and PSG did not have things their own way in Brittany. The visitors did take the lead when Marama Vahirua combined with Kevin Gameiro on the edge of the penalty area before Mvuemba produced the decisive shot.

However, PSG grabbed a point courtesy of a goal in the dying seconds of the first half. Hoarau made the breakthrough, calmly converting from close range after Giuly had crossed low into the penalty box.

Emir Spahic scored a late winner to ensure Montpellier ended a disappointing week on a positive note with a 1-0 win against fellow Ligue 1 new boys Boulogne-sur-Mer. Rene Girard's men lost to Marseille last weekend before exiting the Coupe de la Ligue at the hands of Lens but bounced back with a dominant display capped by Spahic's tap-in 11 minutes from time.
