Muscat double-take sees off Gold Coast

Kevin Muscat's dramatic late penalty for Melbourne Victory condemned 10-man Gold Coast United to their first home defeat of the A-League season in a five goal thriller at Skilled Park.

The Victory skipper sent his initial spot kick over the bar but referee Peter Green saved his blushes by ordering a retake after Gold Coast players encroached into the box.

Green had reduced the home side to ten men by sending off Steve Fitzsimmons for a challenge on young midfielder Leigh Broxham during a four-goal first half.

The result means Melbourne have won back to back games since Muscat returned from injury, while Gold Coast United, the early pacesetters, have not won in three games.

Muscat's penalty atoned for his earlier mistake when he bundled Joel Porter over in the box, allowing Gold Coast skipper Jason Culina to send keeper Glen Moss the wrong way from the spot and open the scoring after 18 minutes.

Melbourne levelled just four minutes later when Carlos Hernandez unleashed a fierce drive from 25 yards. Thompson converted Ney Fabiano's pass to give Victory a 43rd-minute lead but United equalised almost immediately when Porter headed home a corner.

The deadlock remained until Bas Van Den Brink was adjudged to have brought down Archie Thompson in the box four minutes from time, allowing Muscat to seal the points and the second attempt.
