Defiant Favre to stay at Hertha

Hertha Berlin coach Lucien Favre has vowed to fight on despite reaching a new low point in his time in charge of the Bundesliga club on Wednesday night.

Berlin were eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by second division side 1860 Munich on a penalty shoot-out to increase the pressure on the Swiss coach after a run of five consecutive defeats in the Bundesliga had sent them to the foot of the table.

But Favre, who guided Berlin into the UEFA Europa League against all odds last season, is not ready to throw in the towel. "Why should I?" he asked. "A lot of the fans still like me."

Favre's contract expires in 2011 and Berlin's financial problems may be the only reason why he has not yet been fired, but after exiting the DFB-Pokal in only the second round and missing out on the extra revenue that competition could have provided, the club's bosses are likely now thinking about cutting their losses before the situation deteriorates even further.

But Favre says he is used to the pressure and does not expect to be dismissed.

"After losing at home to Cottbus (last season), everybody was writing about the end of the Swiss experiment in at Hertha and I am still here," he told Sport Bild magazine.

After that defeat at the very same stage of last season, the Old Lady lifted itself off the ground and ended the year chasing the title until the penultimate round of matches.

Favre now needs a similar recovery starting with Sunday's trip to Hoffenheim.
