FIFA decide against Manchester United investigation

FIFA will not pursue an investigation into Manchester United's capture of teenager Michele Fornasier from Fiorentina, the world governing body have confirmed.

Fiorentina made a formal complaint to FIFA after the 16-year-old moved to Old Trafford over the summer. United made their move as Fornasier was too young to be tied to a professional contract with the Viola under Italian rules.

The issue of youth recruitment has been firmly in the spotlight since FIFA imposed a transfer ban on Chelsea, precluding them from signing any new players in the next two windows, after finding the club guilty of inducing Gael Kakuta to break his contract with Lens.

However, United, who have also been under scrutiny for their signing of Paul Pogba from Le Havre while maintaining they acted properly, will not be investigated by FIFA regarding the Fornasier case.

"We can confirm that we were contacted by Fiorentina with regard to the potential transfer of the player, Michele Fornasier, to Manchester United," a FIFA spokesman told the Telegraph. "However, no formal investigation has been opened since the documentation currently in our possession, from a purely formal point of view, is not apt to sustain such action."

Le Havre have accused United of illegally luring Pogba to England but FIFA have confirmed that the French club are yet to register a formal complaint, even if the French Football Federation have not yet released the player's transfer certificate.

"So far, no contractual claim against the player Paul Pogba and/or the club Manchester United has been lodged by the French club, Le Havre, at FIFA," a spokesman said.

"The matter we are currently investigating concerns the request for intervention submitted by the Football Association on behalf of its member club, Manchester United, in relation to the international clearance for the player in question, following the refusal of the French Football Federation to issue the international transfer certificate of the player."
