Rangers manager Walter Smith facing four-match ban

Rangers manager Walter Smith could face a four-match ban if found guilty of misconduct as a result of his behaviour against Kimarnock, the Scottish Football Association has confirmed.

Smith was sent to the stands during the 0-0 draw at the weekend as he raged at Kilmarnock players he perceived to be encouraging referee Steve Conroy to send off Pedro Mendes, although he later admitted he was mistaken.

Both Mendes and his manager were dismissed and Smith will be hit with an automatic two-match ban if found guilty by the SFA. However, Smith was also handed the same punishment following a Scottish Cup tie against Hibernian in 2008 and, under SFA rules, that means his latest indiscretion could be met with an extended ban.

If a four-game ban is imposed, then Smith will miss the Old Firm derby against Celtic on October 4 and three other fixtures, which will be dependent on their progression in the League Cup.

"We're obviously disappointed to have Pedro sent off for what I thought were two fairly innocuous fouls," Smith told the club's official website. "I don't even think in the first challenge that he knew the Kilmarnock player was going to come in and get him. It was a foul but I don't think it warranted a booking.

"For the second booking I'm not even sure he made contact with the player, but that is for the referee to decide. From our point of view it was disappointing. After those bookings the referee has to make sure that every foul of that nature results in a booking and I think that led to the number of yellow cards we had.

"In terms of our overall discipline I don't think we have a problem so I don't know what the difference is this season."
