David Nugent hopes for permanent Burnley move

After opening his Burnley account with two well-taken goals against Sunderland on Saturday, David Nugent is hoping to earn a permanent move to Turf Moor and rejuvenate his international prospects.

Nugent joined Burnley on loan from Portsmouth on transfer deadline day and immediately spoke of his determination to prove a point to his parent club after being played out of position on occasions and scoring only three league goals in two seasons at Fratton Park.

In only his second appearance under Owen Coyle, Nugent came off the bench to score twice in a 3-1 win over Sunderland, ensuring that Burnley's 100% home record continues after three games in the top flight.

Nugent, who has one goal in one appearance for England and still harbours aspirations of making the World Cup squad, admits he is keen to leave Portsmouth on a permanent basis when his loan expires at the start of 2010.

"Everybody makes mistakes and I definitely made a mistake moving down south," Nugent said. "I am here until January and there is an option to extend the loan. Hopefully, I can make it permanent.

"Ever since I got my England cap it's been downhill but hopefully now I can rekindle my career at Burnley and try to get back into the fold.

"I want to show Portsmouth fans and the people down there what they've been missing. Maybe they might be a little bit gutted that they let me go."
