Derby complete loan signing of Everton's Vaughan

Derby County have completed a loan deal for Everton's exciting young striker, James Vaughan until January.

The Rams beat off competition from Middlesbrough for the 21-year-old, who could be involved against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park at the weekend - a side who he scored against in 2005 for his Everton debut.

Vaughan attracted interest from Newcastle United in the summer, and has found first-team opportunities limited this season as Everton have mainly played with one striker. Louis Saha, Brazilian Jo and now the fit-again Yakubu are all vying for the position, supported by makeshift strikers Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini at times.

Vaughan has been sidelined by knee injuries and a dislocated shoulder in recent seasons and Everton manager David Moyes feels the time is right for the player to go out on loan and play games.

"James has had a few problems with his knee but it's settled now. He trained the last few days and is OK," said Moyes. "It would benefit him to go out on loan. It will benefit him to get some games, that will be valuable to the boy. He has missed a lot of football."

Vaughan will boost Derby's attacking options as they look to end a run of three successive defeats in the Championship.

''This is a terrific bit of business for us; James is a good player with an excellent attitude and tons of ability,'' said Derby boss Nigel Clough. ''He is also different to anything else we have at the football club at this moment, so will add some variety to our attack.

''We are grateful to David Moyes, Bill Kenwright and Everton for allowing him to come here; I think they know we do things properly and will take good care of him.''
