Hammers seal deal for Franco

Former Villarreal striker Guillermo Franco has completed his free transfer move to West Ham, the Premier League club confirmed on Thursday morning.

The 32-year-old was available outside of the transfer window following his departure from the Spanish club at the end of last season and further strengthens Gianfranco Zola's attacking options following the signing of Alessandro Diamanti at the end of August.

Franco, who counts Argentina's San Lorenzo and Mexico's Monterey amongst his former employers, has been without a club since June but has featured for his country, scoring four goals in Mexico's past six internationals.

When news of a possible move to West Ham first arose, his agent claimed that a number of Premier League sides were interested in the free agent. However, he could now make his Hammers debut against Liverpool at the weekend.

"I am really happy to sign for West Ham," Franco told the club's official website. "It was my dream to come to the Premier League and I am proud to play for a club that has so much history. This is a very important stage of my career and I hope to score lots of goals for the club this season and then play at the World Cup.

"The main motivation was to play in the Premier League. I love English football and I love the Premier League. I had the possibility of joining Estudiantes and two Spanish clubs, but it was the Premier League that drew me here."
