Adebayor accepts charge, as Redknapp hits out

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has ''reluctantly accepted" the violent conduct charge put on him for his clash with Robin Van Persie at the weekend.

The Togo international appeared to rake his studs down Van Persie's face after a tackle in a fractious encounter with former club Arsenal at Eastlands. The Dutch forward later called it a "mindless and malicious stamp."

A statement on City's club website read: ''Manchester City announce that both the club and Emmanuel Adebayor have reluctantly accepted the violent conduct charge laid by the Football Association in the wake of the victory over Arsenal. The player strongly maintains that he did not intend to act in a violent manner.

''He apologised on the day to Robin van Persie personally and to the wider public for the outcome of the challenge. We await the findings of the FA's Disciplinary Panel which is due to meet on Thursday.''

City's decision not to contest the charge means Adebayor will certainly miss this Saturday's top of the table derby with rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.

A three game ban is most likely, meaning he will also sit out City's Carling Cup tie with Fulham and the home Premier League game with West Ham on September 28.

A further charge of improper conduct, for Adebayor's pitch-length dash to celebrate his goal in front of Arsenal's fans, is also being considered. If found guilty another game could be added to any ban.

However, Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has criticised the role of Arsenal fans in Adeabyor's controversial goal celebration.

Adebayor sprinted the length of the field after scoring against his former club, leading to a Football Association charge over the scenes, but Redknapp is backing the striker because of the abuse he suffered.

"I've got no time for people kicking anybody or being violent on the football pitch and he was wrong to run the length of the field,'' Redknapp said. "But it's very difficult when you're getting abuse throughout the game like he was.

"It's not celebrating a goal that cause riots, it's idiots who want to start riots. If I had been standing there and we had been giving him grief all game and he did that, I would probably say 'fair play'.''

Redknapp was abused by fans after crossing the divide and joining Southampton after a spell at Portsmouth - and he cannot understand the mentality of some fans. "Adebayor went over the top but, at the same time, he was getting a lot of abuse from the fans for the whole afternoon,'' he said.

"What did he do really? Run back and go like that, saying he scored. I'm not saying it's right but if you can't go near the away fans when you score because you'll cause a riot...''

"Why do people need to shout abuse and cause riots? Why can't they just watch a game of football? I don't understand it. There's no need for it and there must be something wrong with you if you want to do that.''
