Sunderland forward O'Donovan goes out on loan

Sunderland forward Roy O'Donovan has dropped down two divisions to join Southend United on loan for a month, the League One club confirmed on Wednesday.

O'Donovan, 24, joined Sunderland from Cork City in 2006 but has never been able to command a regular first team place at the Stadium of Light, making just four Premier League starts.

The Republic of Ireland B international has enjoyed loan spells with Dundee United and Blackpool in the past and is now heading for Roots Hall in a deal that could be extended up to a maximum of 93 days.

"We looked at Roy two years ago when he was at Cork," Tilson told the club's official website. "He did really well back then but at the time because he was grabbing headlines bigger clubs overtook us.

"We have been trying to bring in a forward with pace and Roy fits that bill perfectly. He will stretch teams which is what we require at the moment and he offers us something we don't have."

Meanwhile, Sunderland have confirmed that youngster Jordan Cook is expected to be sidelined for "several months" after suffering a cruciate ligament injury in a reserve tie against Burnley.

The striker, who spent a spell on loan at Darlington this season, fell awkwardly while representing Keith Bertschin's side and will now undergo surgery.
