Wigan Athletic have handed a trial to former Sunderland goalkeeper Jurgen Macho.
The 32-year-old Austrian international is a free agent after leaving Greek side AEK Athens earlier in the summer and as such could sign for Roberto Martinez's side outside of the transfer window.
Macho, who spent a season at Chelsea early in his career, had been training with the Latics and played for the reserves against Manchester City on Tuesday night. Although Wigan lost 4-3 he was not at fault for any of the goals.
The 6'4" goalkeeper spent two seasons at German club Kaiserslautern, making 54 appearances between 2005 and 2007, and played in all three of Austria's group stage matches at Euro 2008.
Fellow Wigan trialist Modeste M'Bami also took part in the match against City, alongside midfielder Olivier Kapo, who is returning from injury.
