Wenger criticises "artificial" plans for quotas

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hit out at the Premier League's plans to introduce quotas for home grown players.

The French coach claims the rule is "artificial'' and will add nothing to the game.

The new home grown rule will force Premier League clubs to name eight players out of a 25-man squad who have spent at least three years under the age of 21 at a club in either England or Wales.

The north London side are famed for signing the best young talent from around the globe and nurturing them in their Academy. The new rule could force Wenger into a rethink of his philosophy.

Wenger declared: "I am not in favour of it, and I said that many times. I feel that when you want to see the best players in the best league in the world, you have to be open.

"To accept competition - and we live for competition - it is not to accept artificial rules and that is why I am against it.''
