Toni: I will fight for my place

Luca Toni has vowed to fight for his place in the Bayern Munich first team, and revealed he is willing to play in the reserves to prove himself to coach Louis Van Gaal.

Toni, 32, has scored 51 goals in 75 games since moving to the Allianz Arena from Fiorentina in 2007 but Van Gaal has been unimpressed with the Italian's fitness since returning from a summer ankle injury.

Last week, Toni admitted he may have to "consider a transfer" after Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic were preferred up front in Bayern's opening games, but now the 6ft 5in striker has pledged to do whatever it takes to get back into the Bayern first team picture.

"I know that I am not his ideal striker, but it is possible that the coach changes his mind,'' said Toni. "I am convinced I have the quality.''

With Italy closing in on World Cup qualification, the striker is desperate to stake a claim for a place in Marcello Lippi's squad, and Toni revealed he is willing to step down to the third tier of German football and play for Bayern's reserve team in order to prove his worth.

"I really want to play,'' he said. "I am ready for the challenge. If I had to play the full year under Mehmet Scholl [in Bayern's reserves], then that would be humbling. I want to give everything for Bayern. I want to keep scoring goals here and I think I am capable of that.''
