Gomes in contention to make Spurs comeback

Tottenham goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is in contention to make a comeback from his groin injury this weekend against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old Brazil international has missed four games with the problem suffered against Hull last month but was fit enough to be a substitute on Saturday against Manchester United, a defeat that saw Carlo Cudicini concede a free-kick in the corner of the net he was guarding.

It is thought that Gomes was not quite ready for a first-team return against United but he will have had another week of training before the trip to Stamford Bridge on Sunday to face the Premier League leaders.

Jermaine Jenas also staked his claim for a place in the starting XI when he came on at half-time for his first appearance of the season following a calf problem.

Centre-back Sebastien Bassong is looking to bounce back from the defeat to United. The Cameroon international said: ''We have to show a good reaction at Stamford Bridge, we have a good squad, a good spirit and that's what we intend to do.''

The Chelsea clash will be another test of Spurs' top-four credentials.

Spurs midfielder Niko Kranjcar, after making his debut for the club at the weekend, said: ''Everyone is talking about the top four but we'll take each game as it comes and hopefully we'll achieve that towards the end of the season.

''We'll see at the end of the season. One game doesn't tell everything, we have to keep working hard and believing in ourselves.''
