Real Madrid sporting director Jorge Valdano believes Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering from nerves following his £80m summer transfer and has reminded supporters that even the great Zinedine Zidane required a bedding-in period.
Expectation surrounding the reigning FIFA World Player of the Year's impact at the Bernabeu has been astronomical ever since he formalised his world record transfer from Manchester United over the summer.
While the Portugal forward scored a penalty on his La Liga debut, Ronaldo has yet to exhibit the breathtaking form he displayed in his final years at Old Trafford.
But Valdano expects the 24-year-old to write his name into the Real Madrid history books once he acclimatises to his new club and life in Spain.
"I liked Cristiano in the first league game,'' Valdano told RNE. "He scored even if it was from the penalty spot, he had a couple of good moves.
"Maybe he is somewhat nervous because he is a very good professional and he always tries to be the best, but you have to wait a couple of games and then you will see who he is.
"He needs a bit of time to adapt, like what happened when (Zinedine) Zidane moved here.''
