Latics take former Marseille man M'bami on trial

Cameroon midfielder Modeste M'bami has joined Wigan Athletic on trial, manager Roberto Martinez confirmed on Tuesday afternoon.

The 26-year-old is available outside of the transfer window following his departure from Marseille over the summer and has linked up with the Latics as he looks to earn a move to England.

It is reported that M'bami, who made nine appearances in Europe last season as Marseille performed in both the Champions League and the last ever Uefa Cup, has also undergone trial spells with Portsmouth, Bolton and Wolves this summer and now Martinez is the latest Premier League manager to run his eye over the player.

"Modeste has a great pedigree and a great curriculum with top teams around the continent," Martinez told the club's official website. "He can control the tempo of the game with his ability and experience.

"He has a sharp brain, can see a pass quickly and can operate in a few positions around the midfield area. We'll be assessing him over the next week and see what happens."

Meanwhile, Wigan appear unlikely to sign Celtic striker Scott McDonald should they resurrect their interest in the Australian in January.

The Latics were linked with an ambitious loan move for McDonald in the summer but the 26-year-old's agent, Lou Sticca, does not expect his client to leave the Glasgow giants.

"My understanding was there was a tentative approach made to Celtic that was flatly rejected," Sticca told the Evening Post. "As far as Scott is concerned, he has three more years on his contract with Celtic and all he wants is to win as much silverware as possible for the club he has supported from childhood.

"Some players never win anything and very few actually play for the club they supported from childhood. In Scott's case he is doing both."
