Steven Gerrard says Wayne Rooney assured him he was fouled straight after earning England the controversial penalty which put them on the way to victory against Slovenia at Wembley.
Harry Harris: Rooney gives Fergie foot-in-mouth
Rooney has come in for heavy criticism from the Slovenian players for his part in the incident, which saw defender Bostjan Cesar limp off with an ankle injury.
Captain and West Brom midfielder Robert Koren accused Rooney of "going down a
bit too easy", in a week where the topic of diving has dominated the headlines, with Rooney himself accused last week by Arsenal players and officials.
Goalkeeper Samir Handanovic claimed "it was a clear foul against our player, and maybe Rooney should have been yellow-carded."
But Liverpool captain asserted: "Wayne seems to think his shirt was pulled. I asked him straightaway if there was any contact, and he said he got dragged back. I didn't get a good angle of it because I played the pass, but Wayne said
there was contact."
