Dutch coach warns Van der Vaart over Real stay

Rafael van der Vaart has taken a 'big risk' by opting to stay at Real Madrid despite interest from a number of clubs prior to the close of the transfer window, according to Holland manager Bert van Marwijk.

Van der Vaart was widely expected to join fellow Dutchmen Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder in leaving the Bernabeu this summer but the midfielder snubbed a number of clubs - reported to include Everton - as he remained in Spain.

With Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Xabi Alonso all arriving at Real over the summer, Van der Vaart's chances of commanding a regular starting place under Manuel Pellegrini appear to be slim.

And with Holland having already qualified for the World Cup finals next summer, Oranje boss Van Marwijk hopes Van der Vaart's decision does not impact on the former star's international prospects.

The Oranje coach told De Telegraaf: "He has taken a big risk. Though Rafael has had signs he will play, nothing is guaranteed after what went on in pre-season.

"He's made his choice, but will he even play in his favoured position? At Madrid he is just one more player."

Holland play Japan in a friendly on Saturday before travelling to Hampden Park to face Scotland in their final World Cup qualifier.
