Hull sign Celtic striker Vennegoor of Hesselink

Hull City have signed Dutch striker Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink, who was released by Celtic at the end of the Scottish Premier League season, on a two-year deal.

As a free agent the 30-year-old is allowed to join the Tigers outside the transfer window, which closed on Tuesday.

Hull chairman Paul Duffen claimed his Premier League club had beaten some well known European sides to bring the Holland international to the KC Stadium.

"He's been looking at other big clubs in Europe but the Premier League is where he wants to come and play with us," Duffen said. "I'm delighted we have beaten off all the competition to bring him to the KC Stadium.

"We've definitely wanted an experienced, top-drawer striker who scores goals and Jan has scored prolifically in top leagues in Europe. It's what we need. We didn't score enough goals last season. Going forward we have a lot of new talent and Jan will play his part in using his experience to settle them down."

The former FC Twente star spent three years in the Scottish Premier League after joining Celtic from PSV Eindhoven in 2006. During his time in the Dutch Eredivisie, Vennegoor of Hesselink scored 139 goals in 299 games and averaged almost a goal every other game in the SPL.

The Dutchman made his international debut in 2000 and represented Holland at World Cup 2006 and Euro 2008 but has been out of favour for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

Meanwhile, Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill has signed a new three-year deal. The 26-year-old Wales international, who has played for the Tigers in all four professional divisions, is now committed until 2012.

Myhill joined Hull from Aston Villa in a £50,000 deal six years ago.

The player has re-established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper after losing his place to Matt Duke for a spell midway through last season.

Manager Phil Brown told the club's official website: "Over the last two or three years, I have seen that Boaz Myhill is a Premier League goalkeeper, there is no doubt about that.

"He stepped up to the plate very admirably last season, albeit in difficult circumstances with Matt Duke breathing down his neck all year.

"I know Dukey got himself into the first team for six or seven games and that must have surprised Bo at the time, but he has come back stronger. I'm delighted to get Bo tied up to a decent contract long term."

Brown added there could be "one or two more announcements in the near future" regarding the contracts of other players.
