UCLA and UC Irvine played to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon in the final exhibition contest before the 2009 season officially begins. The Bruins made a late comeback to send the game to overtime, with freshman Evan Raynr scoring off a Prince Lapnet cross in the 84th minute.
After a scoreless first half that saw both teams combine for just four shots, the Anteaters got on the board early in the 48th minute, when Brett Berman collected a clearance at the top of the box and unleashed a hard shot into the upper left corner past Brian Perk.
The Bruins came alive in the final 20 minutes of regulation, with substitute Eder Arreola providing a spark on the left wing. In the 83rd minute Lapnet made a nice move to get open down the left wing and sent in a cross, connecting with a wide-open Raynr, who slotted the ball into the back of the net for his first goal.
"In the first half, we were very tired and lacked some energy. We trained hard throughout the week, so we knew they would be a little lethargic," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo in a press release. "Prince and Dakota [Collins] came in and did well and had some great energy, and Michael Stephens could have scored in the overtime on a pass from Prince."
