Iriekpen has contract cancelled by mutual consent

Izzy Iriekpen has had his Hamilton contract cancelled by mutual consent, just over a month after signing a two-year deal.

The 27-year-old defender claims the move to Accies resulted in significant ''hardship'' for his family, and manager Billy Reid has agreed to let him leave.

It is the second time Iriekpen has turned his back on Hamilton. He was on the brink of joining them during the January transfer window, only to change his mind at the last minute and sign for Bristol City.

The U-turn angered Reid but that did not prevent the Accies boss coming back in for the player when he was released by the Robins this summer.

Iriekpen, who captained Hamilton in two of their four games this season, said in a statement published on the club's official website: ''It is with regret that I must announce my departure from Hamilton Academical FC.

''I have sincerely enjoyed the last two months with the team and was looking forward to calling Scotland home. But I did not realise this move would result in such hardship for my family.

''After explaining my personal situation to manager Billy Reid, he, Hamilton's front office and I have agreed to an amicable separation.

''I want to thank the Accies for giving me the opportunity to play for this football club and am grateful for having been named captain for two games after such a short stay. I wish the lads, and Hamilton's loyal fans, all the luck in the world.''

The club said in a statement they wished Iriekpen and his family all the best for the future.

It remains to be seen whether Reid will try to replace the defender before the transfer window closes at 5pm today.

The Accies boss is reportedly chasing Derry City defender Kevin Deery, whose club are reluctant to let him leave before his contract ends in November.

Iriekpen was one of 12 players Reid has already brought to Hamilton this summer.
