Kranjcar snubbed Everton to sign for Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp has completed the signing of Niko Kranjcar from Portsmouth.

And the player has revealed he snubbed the chance to sign for Everton in favour of a move to White Hart Lane.

He told Croatian newspaper Jutarnji List: "This is true. Everton is also a big club but, in the end, the tradition and greatness of Tottenham made the difference.

"I also knew manager Harry Redknapp, and Luka Modric and Vedran Corluka told me great things about the club.''

Kranjcar has signed a four-year deal for a fee believed to be in the region of £2.5m.

"Now I will play for a club with big ambitions - ambitions which are similar to mine,'' he added. "I want to fight for trophies and I'm sure that at Tottenham I will get this chance, which I didn't at Portsmouth. So for me this is a big step ahead in my career. If everything at Fratton Park would stay the same as before, I wouldn't push so much for the move.

"But the ambitions were gone, the president wasn't able to give so much money as before, players are leaving the club. I just didn't want to stay in such a club.''

Redknapp is delighted with the arrival of Kranjcar. "I know him from working with him and it is terrific to have him,'' he said. "I've got two Croatians here who are fantastic professionals. Niko is a terrific footballer, a real Tottenham-type player. He'll do well here. He was in the last year of his contract and it was a decent deal for him, so both clubs are happy.''

Kranjcar joins Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch as players Spurs have signed from Pompey since January, as the team Redknapp built at Fratton Park gets dismantled.

Redknapp was also interested in England goalkeeper David James, although buying a 39-year-old would have been a huge shift in transfer policy for Spurs, who have a history of targeting players with re-sale value.

Redknapp confirmed that a deal for James was not possible, adding: "There was nothing there. David is a fantastic goalkeeper but I have two here and they are fantastic.''

Spurs were also linked with a loan move for Sunderland centre-back Anton Ferdinand, with Alan Hutton going in the opposite direction, but no deal was completed.

Redknapp was looking for cover on the left flank following Luka Modric's injury and Jamie O'Hara's loan to Portsmouth, with Kranjcar able to operate across the midfield.

The Spurs boss confirmed chairman Daniel Levy made an inquiry about West Ham centre-back Matthew Upson that did not come to fruition.

Redknapp was in the market for a defensive midfielder earlier in the summer when he looked at Patrick Vieira, although he is also a fan of Vieira's Inter Milan team-mate Sulley Muntari after working with him at Portsmouth.

Sky Sports sources also understand Tottenham have made an enquiry for Manchester City winger Martin Petrov.

Petrov's future at City looks in doubt following the arrival of a number of high-profile signings and a several clubs are thought to be monitoring his situation at Eastlands.

Redknapp has been a long-term admirer of Petrov and is thought he has sounded out a move for the Bulgarian as he weighs up his options before the close of the transfer window.
