Portsmouth face frustration in Zaki pursuit

Zamalek have told Portsmouth that they will only consider selling Amr Zaki to the Premier League club in January.

Zaki, who exploded onto the English scene with Wigan Athletic at the start of last season before suffering a loss of form, is one of Portsmouth's key transfer targets following the completion of Sulaiman Al Fahim's takeover on Wednesday.

The Egypt striker scored 10 goals in his first 19 games for the Latics but did not score for the remainder of the season and angered then Wigan manager Steve Bruce with his attitude when returning late from international duty.

Al Fahim hopes that Pompey manager Paul Hart will be able to keep Zaki in line though as he attempts to bring the 26-year-old to Fratton Park before the close of the transfer window.

"I made an offer for Zaki's agent Nader Shawki to sign the player either on loan or on a permanent basis," Al Fahim told Egyptian radio. "Hart should make sure that Zaki won't repeat such actions.

"Zaki is a very talented player but we want to be assured that he can make the same impact he had during the first half of last season."

However, Zamalek appear unwilling to lose a player that was linked with Liverpool and Real Madrid last season and have informed Portsmouth that they will not consider allowing Zaki to leave before Tuesday's deadline.

A deal may be resurrected in January though if Portsmouth are able to offer a reported transfer fee of £3m.

"[Zaki's agent] Shawki did not tell us anything regarding that offer, he just told us that Portsmouth want Zaki to travel to England to sit down with their coach Paul Hart," Zamalek board member Ibrahim Youssef told Filgoal.com. "We rejected that request but are willing to hold more talks with Portsmouth in January.

"We will have more time then to consider any offer. We may accept to sell Zaki to Portsmouth for the figure Al-Fahim mentioned."

Meanwhile, Sunderland have rejected a bid from Portsmouth for defender Nyron Nosworthy The Hampshire side are in the market for a defender, with 31-year-old Sylvain Distin set to complete a move to Everton.

However, Sunderland were unimpressed by Pompey's valuation of 28-year-old Nosworthy - a free transfer signing from Gillingham four years ago.
