Korean starlet Ki set to join Celtic in January

South Korean midfielder Ki Sung-yong will join Scottish club Celtic in January in a deal FC Seoul described as "win-win" for both clubs.

Celtic had been keen to take the promising 20-year-old to Glasgow immediately but FC Seoul were reluctant to let him go with the team sitting top of the Korean league midway through the season.

However, after further negotiations, Seoul agreed to let Ki go in January with South Korean media putting the transfer fee at around £1.9m.

"FC Seoul has decided to allow Ki Sung-yong to play in Europe, starting from January next year after the (Korean) season is over," his club said in a statement on Friday.

"FC Seoul received a request late on the 27th (Thursday) from Celtic to take Ki in January and after some consideration we viewed it as a win-win situation and decided to accept their offer."

Seoul said the specifics and details had yet to be worked out and Celtic had asked for the transfer fee not to be disclosed. The South Korean club also recently sold Lee Chung-yong to English Premier League side Bolton and were adamant another rising talent would not be offloaded before the end of the season.

"FC Seoul now have the chance to succeed in the domestic league and become champions of Asia, while Ki will give his best for our fans before leaving to achieve his dream of playing in Europe."

Celtic are currently top of the Scottish Premier League on goal difference after two games, but were eliminated in the playoffs for the Champions League group stage by Arsenal.
