Aberdeen goalkeeping legend Leighton leaves club

Aberdeen goalkeeping coach Jim Leighton has left the club. The Pittodrie legend was binned by ex-team-mate Mark McGhee, who is understood to be eyeing up a swoop for Motherwell goalkeeping guru Colin Meldrum.

The former Scotland international, who played for the Dons from 1978 until 1988 and returned for a second spell in 1997, became the club's first-ever goalkeeping coach in 2000.

McGhee praised the former Manchester United stopper on Aberdeen's official website.

He said: "On behalf of everyone at the club, I would like to thank Jim for the massive contribution he has made in his two spells here, both as a player and a coach, and we wish him all the very best for the future."

Current Aberdeen goalkeeper Jamie Langfield relished his first clean sheet of the season as his side cantered to a convincing 3-0 victory at Hamilton in the Scottish Premier League on Saturday.

The Pittodrie side had conceded 11 goals in their opening three European and domestic matches of the season, but hit their stride and were worthy winners at New Douglas Park.

Langfield said: "This was a lot better from us - we came here and put on a performance, and I think that right from the start, we got at them.

"It's been a hectic few weeks for me. I wouldn't say I've been playing too badly but when a goalkeeper is losing goals, people think it might affect your confidence.

"I just have to get out there and to end up getting a clean sheet is great for me and the boys in front of me.''
